One voice
among many.

A concerto asks the soloist to lead and to listen inside the same phrase. Qian has taken that double role to the Tchaikovsky First and the Prokofiev Second — a work whose first-movement cadenza remains among the most demanding written for the instrument.

At Eastman he teaches secondary piano and serves as studio teaching assistant to Dr. Marina Lomazov. His students have ranged from five years old to college level, and the instruction is built around each of them rather than around a method — technical skill and musical artistry developed together, at whatever pace the player actually needs.
